Culture and Bananas
La Orotava is THE PLACE on the island to admire the multitude of historical buildings, like the one in the picture to the left, the "Casa de los Balcones" (500m from Hostel). The balconies were a status symbol of the rich merchants. If you're guest at Hostel Teneirfe, you can have the impressive history of La Orotava right at the doorstep. Gorgeous churches, monasteries and huge town houses give evidence of the wealth of canarian merchants in the past centuries. They traded cane-sugar, wine, precious natural dyes and finally bananas. These merchants created the wealth which built this beautiful town.
From La Orotava you have excellent connect- ions to nearly all places of interest.
The northern beaches, El Teide National Park, the subtropical rainforest of Anaga and the famous gorge of Masca are easily reached by car or public TITSA buses.
